In honor of Kim Sjostrom

February 12, 2008

For those of you who don’t know the story of Kim Sjostrom, she passed away on January 19th during her wedding. She had only been married for less than an hour when she collapsed in her husbands arms during their first dance. Kim, 36, passed from heart disease.

Her husband Teddy Effkarpides consoles himself by reading a list of “101 Reasons Why I Love You” that she had given him on their first christmas together. “Number 1. You make me smile.” and No. 98 is especially difficult: “you’re the one I want to grow old with.”

After reading this story on Yahoo.com it made me want to compose a list for the man in my life telling him 101 reasons why I love him.  Even though I’m sure he knows there are many ways and reasons why I love him, I know I would be devastated if something happened to me and I never told him that instead of just one, two, or ten things- there were one hundred and one things about him that I think are amazing!

I wanted to pass this idea on to all you ladies out there and encourage each of you to take the time to write out a list for your significant other and tell them, show them, all the ways and reasons why you love them.

A Wedding Gone-Green

February 11, 2008

As our society goes greener with each passing day, more and more people are doing what they to help to save our planet. If you find yourself planning your wedding thinking, “what can I do to help,” we’ve got some great answers for you!

There are a few simple things that can be done to not only make things easier on your wedding, but also on our community as a whole. Things like hiring local vendors will save on transportation and support the local economy, using digital photography will cut back on the use of paper and harsh chemicals. Using recycled paper for your invitations (a great place is Naturally Ever After.com) or even invitation that contain flower seeds that you can plant and grow. Botanical PaperWorks.com has a great selection of handmade plantable wedding invitations. Another thing you can do is send online “evites” for all your pre-wedding events. This saves paper and postage. Evite.com is a great place to customize and send your online invitations.

One thing I myself am personally going to do when I get married is plant a wedding garden. Find a friend or family member who’s got a little land to spare and plant a garden with all the flowers you want at your wedding. This not only will save a huge cost, but is also a wonderful way to get people involved. Plus, you’ll have a little more pride on your day knowing your green-thumb created one of the most important aspects of your whole wedding. If you don’t exactly have a ‘green-thumb’, another thing to do is order organic flowers that are grown without any harsh chemicals.

Serving organic foods, using utensils and plates that can be washed, and getting all your wine from a local winery are just a few other ways to go-green on your wedding day!

Cake Topper Tips

February 6, 2008

Picking out a cake topper can be either very simple or very difficult, depending on who you’re working with! Cake toppers can range from traditional, unique, to ethnic and comical. You’ll need to get some ideas of the styles you like, as well as taking into consideration the feel of how you want your wedding to go, then take them to your fiancee and let him or her help you pick out your topper.

As the fad’s change, we’re finding more and more couples opting for funny toppers or even one’s as simple as the first letter of your last name (or soon-to-be last name) instead of the old fashion figurines. We’ve found a website called MicroDwarf.com that uses your own photos to sculpt caricature like figurines made to look like you and your mate. They’re hand made and come from polymer clay and stand around 6-7 inches tall. (see picture below)

When looking for that perfect piece to adorn you cake with, be sure that it goes with the theme of your wedding. But then again, don’t stress over it too much, whatever you chose will be perfect!

Numbering Your Tables

February 5, 2008

If you’re having a large reception with a served dinner you’ve probably thought about if you should number your tables and assign seats. Well, as much as we think it shouldn’t matter, you really should plan out a seating chart and number your tables. We’ve found one adorable way to do so from Rosanna Inc (rosannainc.com) who offers plates and glasses with black numbers printed on. If you’re wanting to go this route, one thing you need to be sure you double check is with your venue. Some places are weird about what you can and can’t bring into their building. If they’re picky about the plates, ask if you could go with the wine glasses instead.

Another cute way to number you tables is to use a foreign language to help you out. If you were in Paris when he proposed, maybe you could number your tables in French. Another cute thing we’ve seen is numbering your tables by saying “Love” in other languages. If you have ten tables do a little research and find the word LOVE in all ten different languages. Not only is this a creative way to “number” your tables, it will be a great conversation piece.

Tips on Registering for Kitchen Gadgets

February 4, 2008

The smartest thing to do before running into the closest Pier 1 and registering for everything you want, is plan a day with your soon-to-be new mate and walk around your home and look at the things you NEED. You may want those perfect wine glasses, but if you really need new dishes- you might consider finding those first and making sure the ones you want hit the list.

We’re finding more and more couples trying to stay away from the oh-so easy kitchen gadgets and heading towards more ‘couple friendly’ items like his and her’s gifts. Such as couples mountain bikes, or even surfboards for that honeymoon in Hawaii. We’re also noticing couples registering for wines and electronics, as well as the hottest new cleaning gadgets such as robotic vacuums. But as we all know, the timeless gift that is sure to hit everyone’s registry is some sort of cookware, and while shopping for the latest and greatest, we’ve found that Copper is the way to go! Mauviel Cuprinox Style 3.8 qt. (24cm) Copper Saute Pan w/Lid

So no matter what ends up on your lists just be sure the things you need make an appearance!
